KPO Jobs: A Complete Guide to Help You Move Ahead

A Beginner's Guide to KPO Jobs in India

Though I’m in financial education space for the last 15 years, I continuously search for new things that I can share with FinanceWalk readers like this KPO Jobs guide.

I get a lot of inquiries from graduates and post-graduates about making a career in financial KPOs.

So, today I decided to write a post on it.

Here are my experiences and observation of KPO careers and jobs in India.

KPO Guide

Difference

KPO means Knowledge Process Outsourcing, by nature, is suitable for people who’re looking forward to making a Specialist career.

If you’re a graduate and looking for a job, it’s easier to get one in BPO—Business Process Outsourcing.

Because BPOs are mostly process-oriented where your general processing skills come handy.

If you’re a post-graduate and possess domain knowledge, you can make your career in finance in these roles as they require specific domain knowledge plus analytical skills.

Work Timings

Generally, BPOs need you to work in different rotating shifts, and KPOs have regular day shifts.

Skillset

If you want to enter this industry, you should be a graduate/post-graduate and have the right attitude and have realistic salary expectations.

Job location

Most new analyst related job solutions and job alerts are in metros—Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Pune and Nashik (recently WNS has opened a research center there).

What is meant by KPO Jobs and How can you apply

The first step is to visit the website of the company and check the job requirements and eligibility criteria.

The second step would be to check whether you’ve all these skills and you’re eligible. If you don’t have the required skills, you should acquire these skills first and then apply them.

You need to be a graduate/postgraduate (MBA, CA, CFA) and need skills like:

  1. Solid analytical skills
  2. Curiosity and interest in analyzing, understanding companies in depth
  3. Solid fundamental valuation skills acquired in business school
  4. Interest in understanding, analyzing a company’s business
  5. Clear financial and quantitative concepts
  6. Ability to build financial models
  7. Sectoral expertise in Telecom, Media, Technology, Insurance, Banking, Food & Beverage.
  8. Strong analytical and MS Excel skills (Macros, V-Lookups and Pivot Tables) with strong communication skills
  9. Ability to write research reports

How can I get a job in KPO?

The third step would be to prepare your resume/CV and make it customized for the job you’re interested in. Remember, a good resume can fetch you interview calls.

The fourth step is to upload your resume on different job sites like Naukri, Monster, etc.

The fifth step is to update your LinkedIn profile. Nowadays, many vacancies are filled by using the LinkedIn database.

The sixth step is to visit the companies’ websites and fill their online application form.

The seventh step is to wait for interview calls and be prepared for interviews.

Remember, every step in this process is equally important to make a career in the KPO industry in India.

If you do all these steps on your own, you’ll be ahead of 90% of the crowd.

What type of Job is KPO?

If you have a degree in MBA, CA or CFA, then Financial KPO is always beneficial for you.

Whether you work for a financial KPO or you, get work outsourced from them, in both the scenarios you will be in demand.

The very reason being the degree of MBA, CA and CFA are all linked to finance, and the technical skills which are gathered from these studies are helpful in the work of financial KPO.

From the MBA’s point of view:

The degree of MBA (Master of Business Administration) gives you an insight into all the aspects of business administration, whether it is with Human Resource, or with Product development or with Management or in Finance.

As such you can expect to work in financial KPO if you have an MBA degree, and you will earn more if the specialization is in Finance.

From CA’s point of view:

The degree of CA (Chartered Accountancy) is valuable from both the angles, i.e., getting outsourced work from KPO and also getting a job in this position.

If you are in practice and have specialization in any specific field, then expect to get some work outsourced from KPO, and if you are a fresher, you can join them and earn handsome money.

Is KPO a good career option?

Yes. If you compare all the three degrees, you will understand that these people are mostly involved in all the workings of financial KPO, whether it is on their payroll or as their partner.

CA, CFA, and MBA are degrees that provide the skill set for the working that financial KPOs are involved with, and so it is always a good place for such degree holders.

Benefits

  • Cost-effective – Mostly, the work associated with KPO is done at a much lower price in comparison to the cost which the organization would have incurred if it was supposed to do that same work within the organization.
  • Work conducted by knowledge related job is mostly technical, and as such, there are a lot of professionals attached to the task.

We get the work done by a person having specialized skills in that area, thereby increasing the effectiveness and quality of the work.
  • Organisation also gets the benefit of time zone, since sometimes BPOs work in different time zone as such the organization can utilize the advantage of 24 hrs working.

In this post, I plan to cover the top 30 financial companies in India.

There is no shortage of opportunities for the right person to have excellent skills in such an international consulting project.

I am a Chartered Accountant by profession but if I want to create my carrer in US KPO then what other qualifications or certificate course will be helpful for me to stand out from every applicant? • Hi Shachi,

Given your existing background, here are some key differentiators for US KPO applications:

      1. US GAAP and IFRS expertise: Bridge the accounting standard gap with online courses or certifications like AICPA’s US GAAP Certificate or ACCA’s IFRS Certificate.

      2. Industry-specific knowledge: Target specific KPO niches (e.g., healthcare, finance) with relevant certifications like CHIA, CPA (US), or industry-focused online courses.

      3. KPO software proficiency: Master KPO tools like ERP systems, data analytics platforms, and workflow management software. Highlight them in your resume and cover letter.

      4. Networking and US market understanding: Connect with US KPO professionals online and attend industry events. Research US KPO trends and market needs to showcase your knowledge.

      5. Highlight international experience: Showcase your adaptability and cultural awareness gained in Nigeria. Focus on transferable skills like communication, problem-solving, and working in diverse teams.

Remember, a personalized approach is key. Tailor your resume and cover letter to each KPO opportunity, emphasizing relevant skills and achievements. Good luck!

    • Dear Manish,

      For BA:

To get into business analysis in software companies, you need to have strong domain knowledge, coordination skills, excellent communication skills, should be proficient in tools Rational Rose and Microsoft Visio, Excel and passion for writing. Managerial skills are required when you are working as a Principal Consultant.

Career path depends on the company and the business analysts are also called as Domain Experts/Subject Matter Experts/Functional Consultants.

      For KPOs:

To shift to financial KPOs, acquire the skills mentioned in the article above and then you can apply to these financial KPOs.

    1. Does KPO job involves calling ? And if calling is a part of the job, who am I supposed to face as a KPO professional, end user (daily customer seeking financial advisory) or a client ?

    2. I got an engineering degree only. If I learn financial modeling through self-study would that be enough to get into a financial KPO ? And knowledge of business intelligence can be considered as an add-on ?

    3. How do I zero in on a specific sector as you mentioned in the article ?

Very soon you can read review of Actionedge on FinanceWalk.

Working in high-end KPOs will really boost your career. After working for 3-4 years, you can look for managerial positions in the same company or outside. Second option could be starting your career in boutique investment banks and then moving to bigger investment banks.

    • Hi Vimal,

Experience in mechanical sector will not be counted unless the KPO is in the same sector.

After MBA, if you want your pre-MBA experience to be counted, then you need to join the same sector or the sector where the transferable skills are more.

I’ve almost six years of expertise in KPO/BPO, Hotels & US Mortgage. I’ve worked with companies like- Bank of America, Genpact, Radisson Hotels and ELI Research India Pvt. Ltd.

I am good at MIS, Excel, Credit Research and US Mortgage’s law.

But I am pretty confused now, as I would like to have a change in my career again because of many reasons(one of them is- I recently got married, so increase in responsibilities).

So kindly suggest me the companies where I could find my-self stable and make my career in upwards trend(especially in Noida and Lucknow regions only), I already gave my shots in companies like- CPA Global, EnY, Google. So suggest me similar companies.

Also as I am a techie guy, so sometimes I feel like to have a switch for an IT career. But I am not sure about it, as I’ve not done any specialized course for it.

I hope for a helpful response.

  94. Hi Avadhut,

Thanks for posting this article. Very informative. I’m a B.Com graduate and a CFA Level 3 candidate. Also, I’ve 4.6 yrs of experience in a captive financial services firm. However, I left my job a year back due to constant rotational night shifts which took a toll on me, and since there was no opportunity to move laterally into a different profile. I’ve been looking for a job since June 2013 and initially tried to move over to KPOs and research firms. I’ve come close to clearing the interviews but due to some reason, I don’t seem to break in. Fortunately, my 4 yrs of experience was approved by the institute and I’m a regular member. It means I wouldn’t have an issue obtaining the charter should I clear CFA this time around.

I’m concerned about me not having a relevant Research/Analytics experience, as this usually comes in the way of job interviews. I hope not to see myself going back to Back office operations in Finance. Core Finance jobs are what interest me, but if I do still end up in a Back end role, I fear I may not be able to switch to a different area of finance at all in the future.

How do you suggest I approach my job search? Do you think its possible for me to move to a different role after spending 4.6 yrs in a Financial back office?

    • Hi Aj,

It’s absolutely possible, provided you acquire the right skills to perform the job.

I suggest you acquire the skills first and then apply. You can acquire the skills on your own (may take up to 3-6 months) or join a classroom program that will give you hands-on skills that finance jobs need and a boost to your career.

Please check the course page and let me know if you need any more details.

Your current skills are apt for this.

I am working for a Big4 firm in Mumbai since last 2.5 years in the risk advisory dept which is more of an audit work of compliance’s and not so good work considering my qualifications and future career plan. I am interested in making my career in Finance, Banking or Transaction advisory areas like M&A, Equity research Corporate valuations etc.I am not at all happy with my present work content.

I have an offer from a medium sized KPO at Mumbai in their Corporate valuations Dept. The work would involve interaction with the foreign client as well as the entire work is outsourced by their Mumbai Office only & completely managed by the same Office till the submission of the Final Report.I have made detailed inquiries with my friends working there and they have told me that the team & seniors in this Dept are good & there is enough work to learn for at least a year or so.

Considering the fact that the growth prospects are limited in KPOs and work also tends to become monotonous after some time, I may have to switch the job after a year or so.My concern is that whether it would become difficult to get a domestic research/valuations or other good job befitting my qualifications due to working for a Mid size KPO even though I have 2.5 yrs experience with EY in risk advisory dept.?

Can I go ahead & take up this job or decline it?

As per my knowledge, there’s no such criteria by MNCs. Make sure you gain transferable skills in KPO.

Follow the steps mentioned in this article to apply to KPOs. Here’s the list of financial KPOs in India.

Another option is to apply to brokerage houses – Read this article on that.

I am 29 and presently studying in 4th semester of my MBA course with single specialization in Finance. After completing B.Com in 2006, I’ve joined a B.P.O named Convergys in October 2007 where, I was in operations and working for a US bank as a dispute/charge-back analyst and resigned in February 2010. I’ve taken admission in IIPM college in August 2011, where, due to the bad management, the completion of the course got postponed till November 2013 instead of September 2013 because of no classes and examinations of Finance in the 3rd semester. Although, I am studying myself but still due to lack of some conceptual/fundamental knowledge and computational finance or financial modeling, don’t feel confident and prepared to get through in any good financial firm in the current economic scenario. I will be so grateful if you guide me through. Hence looking forward to hear back from you.

You have still 3-4 months to complete MBA.

Focus on acquiring solid skills in financial analysis, modeling, valuation and, report writing. You should be good in Excel.

Right now I am only looking for an internship programme in EY because, it can make an easy entry in EY and I can learn first. And also because I don’t exactly know where I can fit well in the financial sector, however I have been studying about the various roles and responsibilities of different profiles in this field.
As far as profile is concerned, sir, I am good at calculations only but not in the mathematical fundamentals. I always want to learn the things from the depth and I am good at financial ratios and some few concepts only, I generally google or search several books for the best content before any kind of knowledge or preparation and my learning is always based on it(that’s what I am good at and interested in). In a nutshell, I have very less and limited knowledge of financial concepts comparatively and also not familiar with computational finance, that make me stand last in the que in today’s competition. I am so much interested to know about financial modelling programme, why it is necessary and what all the options will be available for a MBA finance guy in the current scenario?

Excel, financial modeling, accounting, valuation and report writing skills are useful and must for financial analysis role. Be it in E&Y or in JP Morgan or in a KPO.

Even if you’re planning an entry through internship, these skills will speed up your career progress.

Either you can opt for a structured training program or you can learn on your own.

In relation to your article on KPOs, I had a doubt. Nowadays, many KPOs are looking out to recruit undergraduates with about 1 year of experience. What could be the possible sources of recruitment of such candidates? Candidates who are HSC passed with experience but are not pursuing further studies…..I would appreciate if you could help me out with this.

    • Hi Ketaki,

Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) units do recruit people with HSC or Graduation. Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) units recruit either graduates with 2+ years solid experience with skills or Post-graduates like MBA/MCA/MMS/MCom.

Having said that every job is performance-based. If you do your job well, you will succeed. Focus on working in a KPO which will polish your high-end analytical and research skills.

    • Hi Rohith,

I would suggest take your time to check different career paths available, chose one and stick to it.

Why did you join Data-warehousing program? What career path you wanted after that?

You can do a reality check in the market – invest some time to do research.
      1. Shortlist 1-3 job roles that you’re interested in
      2. Visit different job sites like Monster, Simply Hired and see what kind of skills and eligibility criteria employers demand.
      3. Check whether you have those skills, if not acquire them through skills enhancement program.
      4. If the learning curve is too stiff, time consuming, go for other jobs where you can use your transferable skills acquired through previous jobs.
      5. Be realistic. Don’t go by media hype. Instead, invest 1-hour daily in skills enhancement. In a span of 6 months you will be on right track.

      Hope this helps.

By doing a simple search in Google, I found out that Syntel and IGate are in Life Sciences KPO/BPO market. Do some more research on it. I’m sure you’ll find something interesting there.

The query you asked is related to SAS and business analytics field. I am sending you a concerned person’s contact details. Check your email.

    • Dear Aalok,

Glad that you liked the article. Congrats for clearing CA program.

About KPO, I think it’s a very good area for beginners, you can spend 2-3 years in this area and check whether the field is right for you.

About salary part – it depends on many aspects like, company, candidate, how the interview goes, location of work etc.

      Hope this helps.

        • Hi Gopi Kishore,

There are two ways which you can take from here:

          1. Financial planning and wealth management career: I would suggest seeking advice of these two people for this field. Nandish and Sadique.

          2. Financial Analysis, modeling and investment banking: For this you need practical skills required by the companies. I checked your profile, you don’t have these skills. If you are really committed to make a career in this field, then you should have either skills or experience or both to succeed in this field.

Please check the course page and let me know if you need any more details.

Please email me (avadhut@financewalk.com) your contact number. My associate will call you to provide complete program details and a detailed career counseling.
